Now to continue the plan of Quick and Easy Development, it’s important that you defend the e-pawn with 4.d3!.

Both kids and adults who haven’t studied openings usually stumble into the wrong move instead, 4.Nc3?!.

How can the most natural developing move be bad?? The answer is shocking – Black has a tactic that gives him the initiative! A tactic is a series of moves that forces an advantage – usually material or checkmate, but here, just a great position. Tactics are chessboard magic – they can turn a good-looking move into a bad one, and vice versa. You can become an OK player just by learning the basic rules of development and protecting your pieces, but to become a good player, the most important skill is learning master tactics. That’s why I wrote Power Chess for Kids Vols. 1 and 2 – so kids can enjoy learning all they need to know about tactics, and become one of the best players in their school or club. If you haven’t read those yet, a great next step would be ordering them online.

So… what is the magical tactic that gives Black the initiative after 4.Nc3?
